I asked small business owners why they don't use a booking system. Here's what they actually said

I spoke with a number of small dog grooming businesses recently, mostly out of my own curiosity about the industry. I asked a simple question: why not use a booking system instead of doing it all by hand.

The answer was not what I expected. It was rarely about cost, and it was almost never about stubbornness. Most of them genuinely did not know where they would even start. Looking at a list of booking tools felt like a wall, not a shortcut. Several said outright that manual felt safer, because at least they understood it completely.

That is a completely reasonable response to being handed too many options with no clear starting point. Nobody wants to spend a free evening comparing six pieces of software they do not understand, on top of an already full day.

It also matches what the wider research on small business technology adoption shows. The biggest barrier is not price. It is not knowing where to start, and not having anyone show them the one small step that would actually help.

This is really the whole argument for starting small. Not a full system overhaul, not a list of ten tools to evaluate. One task, looked at properly, with one clear fix. That is a starting point someone can actually say yes to.
