Why small businesses aren't avoiding AI, they're avoiding confusion
It gets framed as resistance. It is not resistance. It is confusion, and those two things need completely different responses.
The most commonly cited reason small business owners give for not adopting AI is not cost. Across several surveys, it is lack of understanding and confidence, consistently ahead of price. Among the smallest businesses, the majority say they simply do not see how it applies to what they actually do all day.
That is not stubbornness. If nobody has ever shown you a clear, specific starting point, of course the sensible thing feels like sticking with what already works, even if what already works is a diary and a phone.
The fix is not more information about AI in general. It is one small, specific, obviously useful starting point, chosen for that business, not a general pitch about the future of technology.
